>> Geography

Shanghai is located at 31¡ã14¡äNorth Altitude and 121¡ã29¡äEast Longitude, on the west coast of the Pacific, and on the east coast of the Asian continent. Shanghai is situated at the foreside of the Yangtze River Delta. Bordering by the Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces on the west, Shanghai is swept by the East China Sea on the east and Hangzhou Bay on the south. North of the city, the Yangtze River empties into the East China Sea. The city also assumes a central location along the coastline of China. Thanks to its advantageous geographic location, Shanghai today is an excellent sea and river port, offering easy access to a vast hinterland.

>> Climate
With a pleasant northern subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall every year. The average annual temperature is about 16¡æ. September is referred to as Shanghai's golden autumn season. The climate in September is pleasant and mellow, with an average temperature of 24¡æ.

Shanghai has one of the fastest economic growth rates among Chinese cities . The GDP of Shanghai has been maintaining double-digit growth for 13 consecutive years now. Shanghai is striving towards the goal of becoming an international economic, finance, trade and shipping center. The 2004 economic indicators of Shanghai are as follows:

Shanghai, China's biggest economic center is also known as "hu" or "sheng". It has a history of more than 700 years, a total area of 6340 square km, and a resident population of 13.52 million. With an ancient history and a rich culture, Shanghai is at the same time a modern city of glamour and magnificence, having acquired a cosmopolitan outlook by accommodating and absorbing diverse influences.

>> Sights and Attractions

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower ¡ª¡ª Commanding a breathtaking view of the spectacular buildings across the Huangpu River, this 468-meter-high building ranks No. 1 in Asia and No. 3 worldwide in height of its kind. An observation deck, a revolving restaurant, and the "History Museum of the City of Shanghai" can all be found inside the Tower.

Shanghai Museum ¡ª¡ª Initially founded in Dec. 1952, this museum of ancient Chinese art enjoys worldwide renown. The new museum was built in Oct. 1996. Its unique structure of a square base capped by a round top symbolizes the ancient Chinese philosophy that the square earth is under the round sky.

Town God Temple (Yu Garden Bazaar)¡ª¡ªThe Town God Temple is a major venue for Taoist rituals. It contains two gardens, occupying an area of over 10000 square meters. In particular, Yu Garden is a famous classical Jiangnan (area south of the Yangtze River) garden with over 400 years of history. It is surrounded by streets selling traditional Shanghai artifacts, various household goods and local Shanghainese snacks.

Zhujiajiao ¡ª¡ª Zhujiajiao, the so-called "Venice of Shanghai", is Shanghai's best-preserved ancient water town of the area south of the Yangtze River.

Xintiandi ¡ª¡ª Xintiandi is an urban tourist attraction imbued with Shanghai's historical and cultural legacies. Born out of the sprawl of Shikumen housing (literally, stone-gate housing), the unique local architectural style of old Shanghai, it has been converted into a recreational area featuring world-class dining, shopping, entertainment and culture.
 

Xujiahui Catholic Cathedral
¡ª¡ª Xujiahui Catholic Cathedral is a famous cathedral in Shanghai. It is the Catholic cathedral of the diocese of Shanghai. The Catholic Bishop's Mansion of the diocese and a nunnery are both located on the side of the cathedral. This mid-century Gothic building can accommodate over 3000 followers.

The Jade Buddha Temple ¡ª¡ª The Jade Buddha Temple is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in China, with over one hundred years of history. Its architecture resembles the palace style of the Song Dynasty. The priceless treasure in the temple is the jade statue of a seated Buddha carved from a complete piece of white jade. It is said to be the jewel of Buddhist art.

Songjiang Square Tower Garden ¡ª¡ª The Songjiang Square Tower Garden is a garden for admiring historic and cultural relics in the ancient town of Songjiang. It occupies an area of 182 mu. Inside the garden, you can find a cultural relic of national importance ¨C the Square Tower of the Song Dynasty (previously named the Xingshengjiao Temple Tower) and other such sights.

Chongming Island Dongtan Migratory Bird Sanctuary ¡ª¡ª The Chongming Island Dongtan Migratory Bird Sanctuary has a rich diversity of wild birds. Midway through their migration, the birds might take a rest at Dongtan. Red-crowned cranes and other rare birds can often be seen there. Among the list of 227 migratory birds under national protection, 132 species can be found on Chongming Island.

Hengshan Street ¡ª¡ª Hengshan Street is an entertainment hotspot, stretching 2.3 kilometers, and overflowing with 167 commercial outlets that include special bars, caf¨¦s, casual dinning restaurants, entertainment outlets and gyms. The plane trees along the street and the unique European-style buildings hidden in the shade have brought a rich and exotic cultural atmosphere to Hengshan Road.

Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street ¡ª¡ª Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, stretching 5.5 kilometers, is the most famous commercial street in Shanghai. Packed with all kinds of boutiques offering a diverse array of goods, it has become the symbol of Shanghai.
Huaihai Road is described as the "Champs-Elysees" of Shanghai. Many brand name boutiques are along this chic and modern street.
